Our latest featured photographer is Berlin based Tal Shafik. His work references classical street photography with decisive moments framed through strong composition. We sat down with Shafik to chat mobile street photography.
What draws you to street photography? Is it a meditation or a hunt?
Street Photography seems to draw many photographers, and I believe the main reason is ease of access. Most of us live on or around a street, which naturally presents many photographic opportunities. The street is right there, and the size of mobile phones and cameras allows much more candid shooting, without being disturbed (well, almost).
What role does the mobile phone play in your photographic process? Why do you choose to use the ProCamera app?
Though I’m thinking of buying a camera, all my photos are taken and edited on my iPhone 4S. I chose ProCamera over all other apps I’ve tried because of its speed and reliability. It starts up quick and is responsive in seconds and stable throughout the shoot.
Who are you photographic influences?
I like Misho Baranovic‘s use of shadows and light. I enjoy Paul Pride’s street photography. Still trying to find my own style.
Can you share a recent photograph that you’ve taken? What is it about the image that you like?
I called this photo “Untitled Friendship”, and it really captures what I said earlier about the candid shot. I was right in their face and they had no idea I was photographing. I must have taken around 15 shots. I really like the contrast between their facial expressions
