Our 2018 holiday update is all about the details – when focusing, shooting in the dark, or checking previous captures.
This update marks the beginning of our 10-year app anniversary celebrations and shows that we still have lots of ideas and plans for ProCamera.
FOCUS PEAKING (MANUAL FOCUS)
When focusing manually, you can now use our new visual guide that shows you which area of the scene is in focus. Edges will be highlighted in bright yellow for those parts of the images, that are in sharp focus.
Just like the focus magnifier, focus peaking is an addition to our manual focus feature. Both provide assistance when adjusting the focus and therefore are only visible during the actual focusing process.
To activate manual focus, go to Settings > Focus and Exposure > Manual focus. When focus is locked, manual focus is controlled with a slide up/down gesture anywhere on the viewfinder.
IMPROVED LOW LIGHT PHOTOS
The new iPhones have a longer maximum exposure time and our two low light camera modes take full advantage of it.
a) Low Light Plus: The sophisticated capture process of our Low Light Plus camera mode (in-app purchase) automatically combines multiple photos to go beyond the maximum exposure time of the device. When activating the LUX+ button in a dark scene, photos taken with the maximum exposure time will now be merged into a final image. This allows you to capture more light and results in much brighter photos with more details. The displayed photo was taken in the middle of the night!
b) Low Light: Our Low Light mode, which effectively works as a “low ISO mode”, also benefits from the longer exposure times of the new devices. When opening the Control Panel in Low Light mode, you will see multiple exposure time options to chose from. On the latest iPhones, you will even have a 1 second option!
EXIF VIEWER 2.0
Know exactly what is going on in your library: Sometimes, multiple versions of a photo are available and stored in Apple’s Photo Cloud. With full support for files in the cloud, you can see which files are currently not stored on your device in full resolution. If desired, you can also tap the download button (green cloud icon) to save a specific version on your iPhone.
How to open the EXIF Viewer: When viewing a photo (or video), tap the “i” icon in the top bar to open the metadata viewer.
In the following screenshot, you see a photo that includes three versions (bottom to top):
– The original JPEG that was captured along with the RAW file
– The original RAW photo, which is currently only saved in the cloud
– A second JPEG file, which is the slightly cropped edited version of the original JPEG photo
FILE FORMAT SELECTION
We streamlined the file format selection in Settings and the Control Panel. After choosing your desired file format (e.g. HEIF), it will be used in every camera mode and configuration that supports it.
For RAW captures, you can choose between RAW-only or RAW+JPG in the dedicated settings section. The RAW option you choose in Settings will be the one available in the Control Panel (Capture Screen). We recommend using RAW+JPG as your preferred RAW format, so you always get a full resolution JPEG file along with your RAW file. If you choose RAW-only, just a very small preview image will be shown in your photo library.
The “Advanced Settings” in the File format section allow you to set the compression rate for JPEG and HEIF captures independently.
